France's leading Muslim body called Tuesday for imams require a permit to preach in order to eradicate extremist and a new religious body to fight against jihadist propaganda.
Kbibech Anwar, Chairman of the French Council for the Muslim Religion (CFCM), said the country must qu'imams a certificate - "as a driver's license" - who ensured they have encouraged a "tolerant and open Islam" .
The CFCM said it distribute permits testing the theological knowledge and adherence to the principles French and have them sign a "Charter of imams" in which they agreed to "respect the laws of the Republic."
Kbibech did not say whether he thought the process should be compulsory for all imams.
"The time to act is now. The Muslims of France will play their part," Kbibech said.
He also said that the CFCM would set up a "religious Council" that would challenge the jihadist ideology using theological arguments.
From 11 days after the attacks that killed 130 people in Paris, Kbibech said those who engage in violence would "never have the support of Muslims in France."
